generator.x project
The Generator.x project is a conference, exhibition and weblog examining the role of software and generative strategies in current digital art and design.
‘The computer has become an essential tool in all forms of cultural production, and as such it has become the constant companion of creatives everywhere. Increasingly, the computer is both the means of production and the architecture of presentation. In the case of meta-media like HTML and Flash, the software is the medium.’
Generator.x, stylish and bold when it comes to layout and design, looks at the growing movement of Generative Aesthetics, Computational and Procedural Art, and Perfomative Software – including audio-visual art-ware such as VVVV. It is also a growing repository of links to resources on Generative Art as well as features on well known and respected Computation Artisans.

Stephen Vitiello
“Electronic musician and sound artist Stephen Vitiello transforms incidental atmospheric noises into mesmerizing soundscapes that alter our perception of the surrounding environment. He has composed music for independent films, experimental video projects and art installations, collaborating with artists such as Nam June Paik, Tony Oursler and Dara Birnbaum. In 1999 he was awarded a studio for six months on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center’s Tower One, where he recorded the cracking noises of the building swaying under the stress of the winds following Hurricane Floyd. As an installation artist, he is particularly interested in the physical aspect of sound and its potential to define the form and atmosphere of a spatial environment.”

the musiclab experiment
After listening to the music of Britney Spears, we became interested in why some musicians become superstars while other seemingly similar musicians don’t. To understand this process better, we decided to find out how people form their musical tastes. We have created a website where people can listen to, rate, and download songs by cool, up-and-coming artists. All the downloads are free and legal so the site is a great place to find new music, help support emerging artists, and help out science — all at the same time.

Literal
The Musical Time project began in the 2001 as a proposal for creating a web site for the History of Music class at the Milan Conservatory in Italy. The purpose was to create a database or a kind of online library with the student’s analysis of 20th century musical works, studied during each year monographic course. The idea was to make these dissertations accessible for the whole class, creating in a near future a big database with a lot of material for the curious musical researcher and for future course students.
