intro > How to make art.
Art-making is one of the easiest and most lucrative of human activities.
A finished work of art can be exchanged for many desirable things such as food, shelter, sex, fame and money (which in turn could be used to purchase food, shelter, sex and fame).
So, it is understandable that you might want to know how to make art.
In the steps that follow I will share the wealth of my knowledge.

About pdsounds.org
Mission
The mission is to record and share recordings of everything that we can hear. This will only be limited by what personally struck us to record it, and by common sense.
Let’s capture acoustical images, enviroments, things, do fieldrecordings, effects, and collages. Let’s put the recordings in the public domain and offer them for download so everyone can make use of them how they wish.
The Name
The idea behind the name pdsounds is simple and straighforward - it translates to “public domain sounds”.
Underlying concept
We ‘look’ for information but seldom listen, because our visual senses are dominating. We like photography, don’t we? With pdsounds we try to shift our mode of perception for a moment and concentrate on the information that sounds give us. Do some “phonography.”
Sounds have qualities and characteristics, and they evoke reactions as much as pictures do. But we rarely really listen to the stories they tell.

Public Record is the internet-based archive of the Ultra-red organization established for the distribution of work by Ultra-red members and allies. The Public Record archive serves as an interface between the organization and its publics. Born in 2004, Ultra-red’s tenth year, Public Record expands on the group’s mission statement: first, to facilitate cooperation between artists and social movements; second, to occupy the borders between art and organizing; and, third, to radicalize the conventions of electronic music and sound art.
Public Record also serves as an archive for projects the Ultra-red organization commissions from others. Besides the original members of the group Ultra-red, artists and aesthetic-political cooperatives participating in the archive include Elliot Perkins (UK), Kanak Attak (DE), Manoa Free University (AT), Terre Thaemlitz (JP), Pet Shop Beuys (CA), Jack Tactic (US), Aeron y Alejandra (SP), Needle and Sony Mao (US).

Since Autumn 2003 People Like Us have been doing a weekly show on WFMU, called DO or DIY. The aim of the show is to mix highbrow with lowbrow to challenge whether there is much difference. Also, many artists played on DO or DIY get very little radio play (a google search for many of these bands brings the show’s airplay at the top of the results). Each weekly show has been known to have excess of 50,000 listens per year (based on average Realplayer stats archives collected over the space of one year).
Here are the archived playlists and realaudio streams of at least 100 shows from 2003 to the present day. www.wfmu.org/playlists/PL

DO or DIY is a freeform sound art radio show broadcast weekly by Vicki Bennett (project name People Like Us) on WFMU.
This show has been in existence since 2003, and has broadcast more than 100 shows.
The philosophy behind the show is simple. That within the realms of avant-garde and experimental sound art the goalposts defining “accessible” and “inaccessible” are constantly moving. As the radar rises and dips, fragments and shards of underground creations unearth, and popular culture and artist resonate, shifting shapes accordingly with one another in reflections of changing spotlights. The avant-garde and popular culture rely on each other’s energy. People Like Us collage both “hard to listen” works and popular listening matter, showing that in fact, beyond the restrictions of genre, genre IS the restriction and it is possible to like many kinds of art and music. The key is finding the door - DO or DIY leads the way into new and unusual realms of listening and hope to show the way in.
Each show consists of collages made of sound works from the 20th and 21st century, often layered and looped many times over, resulting in an album type effect on each show.

UMFELD DVD : by Jochem Paap & Scott Pagano
Umfeld is an audiovisual production created in HD with audio meticulously composed for 5.1 surround. The piece is an intense sensory expedition that takes the audience through eight chapters comprising a drama drawing on the dynamic arc of a feature film, but consisting of highly abstract sounds and images. Soundscapes modulate rhythmically from intense an subtle to assertive and thundering, always using the surround audio environment to its full potential. In synchronicity with the sound, the images move through an array of contrasting worlds ranging from cold organic black and white synthetic animation to boldly colorful angular compositions with their roots in imagery captured in the old industrial harbor of Papp´s hometown of Rotterdam. Together the exploration of sound an image build upon each other creating and examining detailed worlds of composition and form with a deep embedded desire to forge a progressive approach to the worlds of sound and cinema.
