routes is a community web sound art piece in which visitors to the website download software for recording/creating sound. This software can run on any Apple computer with OSX and sound input although plans exist to port the software to other platforms. The software records sound input into a 30 second buffer. This buffer continuously loops recording new sound on top of the old sound. The user can record for as long as they like but the resultant sound will only be 30 seconds long, an amalgam of all sounds that occur during the recording session.
It is intended that the user run this software on a laptop and record as they go through their day or any part thereof. The subject does not have to be strictly ‘musical’. The resultant sounds should give an aural picture of the individual’s journey. Each timbre will be colored differently by the user’s path through the environment and the collection of ‘noise’ we always encounter but often discard.
Visitors to the website can listen to up to thirty recordings, 15 total minutes, from all of the submissions per visit. Each visit or page refresh will choose a random set of thirty recordings from the list.
