What does a demonstration in Berlin sound like?

Berlin is a demo-machine

In Berlin one can participate in a demonstration every day. There are so many demo’s that a local newspaper has a special section next to the movie schedule and the weather forecast. So you can easily pick your favorite demo for the next week. There is plenty of choice. Immigration, anti-immigration, for democracy, against fascism, for Charlie Hebdo, against gentrification, for bees, against genetic engineering. There is even a demo against the winter on January 31. The flyer is accompanied by a gold metallic emergency blanket.

Alexanderplatz

When Berlin is a demo-machine Alexanderplatz is the gear around which everything revolves. Many demos begin or end here. In that respect we sit in front row with our residency. Monday there were even two at the same time: The xenophobes of Pegida tried to get a foothold in Berlin and the antifascists were opposing them. There was a preponderance of riot police on the streets to keep the two groups apart…

We took to the streets and made some sound recordings with our binaural set. Wondering how a demo sounds in Berlin?

Listen with headphones to any of the tracks above and imagine you are marching with us.
