Freestyle SoundKit is a wearable sound piece that generates and broadcasts electronic beats as users move through the urban environment. The piece consists of body-mounted sensors, an amplifier, a speaker and a sound chip. When the piece is engaged, each step you take is broadcast as a single beat. Each SoundKit contains a different beat to enable you to collaborate with other users to create a collaborative performance. Freestyle SoundKit enables people to use sound to create user-defined spaces that reference both the cinematic and the fantastic; where sonic space is activated through composition, improvisation and one-upmanship. This piece is a continuation of my interest in using sound to create collaborative situations that enable people to interact with their environment as both performer and audience.

It’s the latest project by Jessica Thompson whom you might remember for other projects such as the Walking Machine and the Soundbike, a bike that uses motion-based generators to broadcast the sound of laughter as you pedal through the city.
