belly of the whale project

Over the past two years, Interspecies.com and greenmuseum.org have produced an international project that now involves eighteen composers from ten different countries. Each composer has created a piece of music of less than six minutes in length, that evokes the underwater environment. Our Belly composers use the same source CD, comprised of 300 audio samples of whales, dolphins, walrus, seal, fish, lobster, shrimp, ice cracking, waves, etc. Contributors include some of the most distinguished names in digital composition. Server space prevents us from showcasing entire compositions. For now, we offer 20 second excerpts. This too will change soon.

Imagine an under water concert in a pool, performed as a real-time collaboration with wild whales, and transmitted over the Internet.

With enough funding, we could produce this Belly of the Whale Concert right now. It consists of an onsite session with whales in the wild, possibly orcas off western Canada or belugas in Russia. This live session is broadcast by phone lines to a heated spa anywhere in the world. The audience floats in the pool, and listens to the music through underwater speakers. Interspecies.com has been producing live musical interactions with whales for 25 years, so all we need is the funding, the spa venue and a few talented technicians.
