Bioacoustic investigations and taxonomic considerations on the Cicadetta montana species complex
MATIJA GOGALA and TOMI TRILAR
ABSTRACT
Recent bioacoustic investigations have shown that Cicadetta montana Scopoli 1772 is a complex of morphologically similar sister species that are best characterized by their song patterns. At the type locality of C. montana, only mountain cicadas with simple, long lasting song phrases were heard, recorded and collected. Therefore, we have good reasons to suggest that this type of song is characteristic for C. montana s. str. Boulard described a song of C. montana from France with phrases composed of a long and a short echeme; this type of song is characteristic for cicadas morphologically corresponding to C. montana var. brevipennis Fieber 1876; we suggest to raise this taxon to species level. On the basis of specific song, Puissant and Boulard described C. cerdaniensis from Pyrénées. A similar case was the discovery and description of C. montana macedonica Schedl 1999 from Macedonia; since these Macedonian cicadas are sympatric with at least two other cryptic species in the C. montana group and molecular investigations showed substantial genetic differences between C. macedonica and C. montana or C. brevipennis, we conclude that this taxon should also be raised to species level. Songs of closely related C. podolica and Korean mountain cicada are presented as well.
Key words: Cicadetta montana, Cicadetta spp., cicadas, bioacoustics, systematics.

“pdPod allows the creation of interactive musical applications for the iPod. It integrates Pure Data (http://www-crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/software.html) a visual sound programming language by Miller Puckette which allows the rapid develoment of musical applications. Guenter Geiger has made PDa, a port of Pure Data for PDA linux devices which we recently adapted to run under iPod linux as well. Martin Kaltenbrunner created a GUI application which allows the execution, display and control of PD patches from within podzilla. This application was created at the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Have a look at this paper we presented at the ICMC05 for some ideas what might be possible to do with this application for the iPod [...]”

What
spinCycle is a turntable that allows you to arrange and play colors visually and musically.
How
spinCycle is fitted with a camera that takes the place of tonearm on a normal turntable. Rather than a needle playing grooves in a record, spinCycle creates sounds based on colors that the camera sees. The DJ places brightly colored plexiglass circles on the spinning platter, creating beautiful color patterns that are then translated into sounds. The DJ can rearrange the discs at any time, thereby creating a new soundtrack on the fly.
spinCycle also captures the colors the camera sees and can either project them on a wall or display them on a computer monitor. This hypnotic display changes as the music changes, providing a fun synchronized multimedia experience.
Max/MSP/Jitter is used to do the color-tracking and sound reproduction. Future versions will use a color sensor rather than a web camera, and sound will be emitted from the built-in speaker using tones generated by a microcontroller. For more information, download the NIME paper.

As part of our studies here at VJ Kung Fu, we invite you all to participate in our monthly-or-so AV Challenges. These are assignments we all undertake to produce audiovisual pieces as a global collective – to explore and innovate this medium. The results are licensed to the Creative Commons, and made readily available with the help of Archive.org.

Semiconductors Sound Films are concerned with many processes of digital animation and, by way of these, reveal our physical world in flux; cities in motion, shifting landscapes and systems in chaos. Central to these works is the role of sound, which becomes synonymous with the image, as it creates, controls and deciphers it; exploring resonance, through the natural order of things.
Finely crafted digital work is combined with analogue processes that tailor the nuances and randomness within computer systems as co-conspirator.
Presented as fictional documentaries, these works are set in the future; histories yet to be considered.
These films are screened in galleries, festivals and biennials worldwide; in addition they are presented as surround sound installations. Semiconductor also produce live Sound Film works which they perform at multi-media festivals and events.
Live Sound Film Biography:
Semiconductor are UK artists Ruth Jarman and Joseph Gerhardt. They make films out of sound using abstract landscapes and architecture as, a means to describe aural and visual interpretations of the world. Finely crafted digital work is combined with analogue processes that tailor the randomness and errors within computer systems as co-conductor. Their music can be described as a contradiction where ‘musique concrete’ becomes simultaneously hypnotic and violent, minimal and maximal. These sound-scapes are a playground for imaginary environments and impossible modernist architecture.
Live Digital performance is one strand of Semiconductors output; they also produce surround sound installations and single screen Sound Films which are exhibited at galleries, festivals and biennials worldwide.
