2005 International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME-2005)
The 2005 International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression is the 5th conference on new musical interface design and follows the initial NIME workshop at CHI 2001. Since then, international conferences have been held in Dublin, Montreal and Hamamatsu.
This year, the conference is hosted at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada from May 26 to 28. The conference consists of a three full-day event where research papers, demos and performances will be presented on the state-of-the-art concerning new interfaces for musical expression. Don Buchla will be giving the keynote speech. There will also be invited talks given by Bill Buxton and Golan Levin during the conference.

Alrededor de este proyecto exploraremos los conceptos de arte digital, de espacio público digital, de valores de open source, y lo que llamamos valores en la sociedad occidental, intentando hacerlos más entendibles, más tangibles y disponerlos al trabajo. Usaremos como herramientas, al menos en parte, técnicas de informática y la red como espacio público en el que explorar nuestros valores.

in float, the ship is the play-head and the route is the track. the surrounding islands build the score of the sound installation. within a predefined framework the ship plays the track as it moves from one city to the other.
taking a ferry on the baltic sea is usually just transportation or entertainment on board. in either case, the sea, the location, the depth, the surroundings is insignificant. this sound installation makes all the invisible dimensions and the silent layers of data, audible.
all streams of data: the gps coordinates, distance to islands, depth, direction and speed are translated to sounds and sound controlling filters in real time. the result is a slowly developing soundscape that invites the traveler to listen to it frequently and to take a dose of the moment. float creates an experience where the listener is aware of hearing the location in the middle of nowhere.
we collect real time data and analize nautical charts. gps, sonar (depth) and radar (obstacles) data streams are processed in max/msp/jitter, where they get converted to sound, visualization of sound source and controls.
