Tonewheels Workshop [Berlin]

January 10th 2009 2PM+: Tonewheels–drawn sound and light music with Derek Holzer
xxxxx_micro_research, pickledfeet, Linienstrasse 54, Berlin 10119
U2, Rosa-Luxemburg-Pl. U8, Rosenthaler Pl.
Telephone: 3050187482

TONEWHEELS is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound, inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light source, performance interface and audience display. In this way, TONEWHEELS aims to open up the “black box” of electronic music and video by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to see.

In this workshop, participants will learn about different optoelectronic components (photodiodes, photoresistors, phototransistors and photoelectric cells) and how they can be used to create sound from natural or electronic light sources in our everyday world, as well as from lasers and other modulated light sources. Circuits to drive motors in order to create hand-drawn spinning “tonewheels” will also be shown.

Limited places! Please register at: m@1010.co.uk

About the instructor:

Derek Holzer [USA 1972] is a sound artist who has performed live audiovisual sets using laptops and the Pure Data programming language since 2001. Becoming frustrated with the performance limitations of the computer, he began new experiments with all-analog, light-driven systems in the summer of 2007 which led to the TONEWHEELS live performance. Since then, TONEWHEELS has been performed in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Estonia, Poland and Belgium.

Workshop fee: 12 euros.

Estrutura do Laboratório:

1. Elementos históricos de utilização de objectos sonoros (John Cage, Harry Partch, Fluxus, Fred Frith, Reith Rowe, Akio Suzuki, Max Eastley, etc.). Exemplos de obras sonoras.

2. Noções básicas de física-acústica. Investigação das propriedades sonoras dos materiais.

DODOULTRA: digital ultrasonic receiver - decoder

http://www.dodotronic.com/index.php?center=11&left=1

What DODOULTRA does
Using hetherodyne system, sampled signals are digitally processed, having so a low noise, moreover the sine wave to be multiplied is digitally synthesized (DDS). The result is a further precision than that obtained in analogic systems.

FREQUENCY SHIFTING

The frequency shifting comes in a fully digital way.

The frequency translator offers a lot of advantages than the classic frequency division. Signals reproduced is not calculated on zero crossing basis but the main frequency and his amplitude is digitally computed, by DSP, and a new proportionally lower frequency wave is produced using a precise sine wave generator.

The graphic display offers a wide datas visualization.

Users interact with this device using a precise and simple encoder, a wiper to change functions and setup.

Its low power allow the use of non rechargeable batteries easy to be replaced.

My standard modifications include a battery-powered preamp with audio line-out (1/4″ mono jack) + a viewfinder-mounted LED that indicates sensor overload, and a headphone amplifier (1/8″ jack). I’ve prototyped an accessory mount that holds the sound camera steady along side a video camera, focused on the same point for audiovisual recording. (…) Looking through the viewfinder, you see a normal image. The light sensor’s active region corresponds to a tiny spot in the center of the viewfinder; sweeping the camera across a scene can reveal different sounds, and their source can be pinpointed easily.

Nokia N810 as remote mixing console

http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/09/16/nokia-n810-as-remote.html
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18638

Literal:
The Thinkpad controls my Yamaha 01V96 digital mixer, and the N810 gets there through VNC.
The resolution is perfect. All 20 faders fit onscreen, no scrolling. I’ve been mixing some simple shows from a seat in the audience. Even for the hands-on and chaotic shows, being able to tweak the balcony speakers from the balcony, and set the stage mix standing next to the musicians, is simply amazing.

Hot nanotube sheets produce music on demand

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn15098
http://www.xataka.com/2008/11/04-nanotubos-para-altavoces-delgadisimos

Literal (newscientist):

Sheets made of carbon nanotubes behave like a loudspeaker when zapped with a varying electric current, say Chinese researchers. The discovery could lead to new generation of cheap, flat speakers.

Since the early 1990s, nanotubes have been intensively studied by researchers across the globe. The tiny structures are widely touted as potential drug delivery devices but might also be useful in more exotic gadgets including artificial photosynthesis devices and space elevatorsMovie Camera. But no one has thought to test their acoustic properties until now.

Shoushan Fan and his research team at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, working with colleagues at Beijing Normal University, created a thin sheet by roughly aligning many 10-nanometer-diameter carbon nanotubes. When they sent an audio frequency current through the sheet, they discovered it acted as a loudspeaker.

Literal (Xataka):

Javascript drum machine

http://www.themaninblue.com/experiment/JS-909/

js-909

[Cameron Adams] recently appeared on a panel about JavaScript libraries. He represented the hard working coder that still wrote everything from scratch. He wanted to make something mindblowing for the audience. He ended up creating the JS-909 drum machine entirely in javascript without relying on libraries or flash. While he makes no claims of compatibility, it certainly is a nice bit of kit.

TROIKA: EXPLODED MONOLOGUES

http://www.troika.uk.com/exploded.htm

EXPLODED MONOLOGUES

‘Exploded monologues’ is a wearable machine that allows the user to literally send his voice on one or more of the four different speakers, each of them located approximately one meter from the mouth of the user. A control interface with four different buttons enables the user to choose where his voice will be heard. An additional mask containing a microphone is worn to prevent the listener from hearing the performers voice directly.

‘Exploded monologues’ starts from a reflection on the dialogue through our new technologies of communication and the way they explode the boundaries of our bodies. ‘Exploded monologue’ is a performance tool that expands the possibilities of the narrative. The user is able to simulate different characters and play with the sonic space perceived by the listener.

TROIKA PROFILE

Troika is a multi-disciplinary art and design practice founded in 2003 by Conny Freyer, Eva Rucki and Sebastien Noel, who met while studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

With backgrounds in graphic and communication, art, product design and engineering, we develop a variety of self-initiated and commissioned projects that are both engaging and demanding to the user, from printed matter to product design and custom art installations. Our approach focuses on the contamination between the arts and design disciplines and is born out of the same love for simplicity, playfulness, and an essential desire for provocation.
